Generic User Trust

confidence:
What is a rating's Confidence?

In general, Confidence indicates how sure you are of your rating. It takes a value between 0 and 100%.

In the context of trust ratings, confidence will be influenced heavily by the amount of interaction you have had with the interval. Below is a rough guideline:

Confidence
example

80-100%
someone you know very well in person, such as a close friend or family member

40-60%
longtime online direct interaction and communication, but without ever having met in real life

0-20%
limited (one time) observation of online presence or behavior with no direct interaction or communication

There are some scenarios where may want to lower your rating's confidence. For example:
  • you have conflicting information about the person being rated
  • you have cause for bias in your rating

%
credibility:
What is Credibility?

In the context of trust ratings, credibility indicates how much trust you place in the individual being rated.

More specifically: credibility reflects how much weight you give would give to a rating or statement issued by that user on the relevant topic.

The minimum credibility is 0, which means: no weight. For example: if you consider a user to be a troll, bot, or scammer, you may assign a credibility of 0.

By definition, 100% [change to 1000] is the weight given to the seed user. Usually the seed user is you. Therefore, a credibility score of 100% [1000] indicates you consider that user's opinion to be inherently equal in value, more or less, to your own.

Weight is relative. Suppose you assign Alice and Bob each a credibility of A, and Charlie a credibility of B, with A < B, but 2A > B. That means that you consider Charlie's opinion to "outweigh" that of Alice or Bob individually; but that the combined opinion of Alice and Bob together is enough to "outweigh" that of Charlie.

Under some circumstances, you may wish to assign someone a credibility above 1000. This means you attribute greater weight to that person's statements or opinions than to your own. This may especially be the case in certain topics on which you do not consider yourself to be particularly knowledgeable.
